Lake arrived In town Wednesday and opened an auxiliary Recruiting Station Sta-tion for the U. S. Army in the Ericksen Erick-sen Block. Sergeant Cherakln was born in Kretnenchug, Russia, at which place he saw the present l ur of Russia He was at the City of Libau, the scene of fighting In the present European Euro-pean War. He is familiar with the tactic of the Russian Army, so little of which has been published during the present war. He served as 1st Class gunner with the third F. A. Battalion, U. S. Arniv, uhlch Is'now-nn Is'now-nn the Mov!i-"i border, he has served as Sergeant Instructor In the National Nation-al Guard of Colorado and he should be invaluable In giving the benefit of bis experience to the local company com-pany of Mt. Pleasant, especially as he served In a mounted branch of the service and instructions have Just been received at Salt Lake Ci'y to convert all of the National Guard of Utah Into Cavalry. By Ben Cherakln Manv people wonder why the German Ger-man forces, although outnumbered 5 to 1 by the allies, still are fighting on the offensive, that is, they are fighting on the enemy's territory. Now, the real secret for their success is plainly seen, or can easily be seen by a man with military experience. The reason is answered in only two words, namely. Discipline and Obedience. Obe-dience. The average person does not understand, un-derstand, or is misinformed on th's subject and I can refer to one case when a friend of mine told what, in his opinion was an unjust occurence. He read in the paper of a story where an officer of the German Army took some food away from a soldier that he bought in a slo-e. To a man or a military education, the reason is plainly figured out. When an army is marching through the enemy's territory, ter-ritory, the people will sometimes poison poi-son the food and then give it to the soldiers, or sell it to them, and the result would be the men would get sick and consequently the command would get disorganized for the time being and could not perform their mission. Turkey was only saved by the natural na-tural fortifications of the Dardeneles, and people who have not a natural fortification must be trained in order to repel any enemy that may be jealous jeal-ous of its prosperity. The wages of the average Russian soldier is about three kopecks a day, which in our money is about two cents. The American suiuier can got as much as a hundred dollars a month, including his board and clothing, cloth-ing, lodging and medical attendance, etc. After thirty years of service lie gets a pension of $67.50 a month and the government does not require any labor for it In return. |
