Show HIT THE ilAI.I.!: Our attention is again railed to the fact that work as those in charge will, they are unable to get any interest in-terest worth mentioning stirred up in base ball among either local fans or players. The fans, is it thought, however, how-ever, could easily be brought into line if a team of any .ability could be organized. But that is the sticker Most every old player approached on the subject has some grievance, usually of infinitesimal size and, very much like the small boy, when hf wants to be coaxed and petted says. "I won't play." Other complaints take a more tangible form, for instance, in-stance, "Last year (or year before or any other time) I got beat out of (about two bits we persume, if anything any-thing chances are the speaker was not worth what he did get) and 1 won't have anything to do with it." Or. "I think the players ought to be paid something." With this last one we agree heartily, provided there lf something with which to pay. The idea, however, outside of professional ball, should lie to play for the enjoyment en-joyment of the game, for the benefit bene-fit of the town and as a recreation from daily work. Base ball is the greatest of all games and Is known as the National j pastime, it will.; develop brains , as well as bodies.',. What has become of tho real American young men whom we used to hear described as full of j life, vim and action? Are they a thing of the past and has some of these imitation men we see lounging about, "a cigaret with a fire at one ! end and nothing much at the other," come to take their places? Base ball could be made to work wonders in the way of producing clean, moral and honest men. Boost for it and give it a trial. If something some-thing really IS wrong with it at present, pres-ent, help to correct the trouble. |
