Show Meeting Of Associated Civic Clubs To Be Held The regular monthly meeting of the Associated Civics Clubs of Southern Utah was held at Loa on June 29. A very good attendance attend-ance was present at the afternoon meeting. The visiting ladies at-j tended the meeting in preference to attending a bridge party or a tea. The banquet was held Saturday Sat-urday evening at the Elk Horn Ranger Station on the Thousand Lake Mountain where a very nice program consisting of songs, speeches, musical numbers and dances was provided. That evening even-ing a dance was held at Tory. Trie subject coming up for discussion dis-cussion was "Military Training for CCC's," training to consist of caterpillar operations, aeronautics and mechanics. At the afternoon meeting T. H. Humphreys the State Engineer gave a talk to ihose present on the small reservoir reser-voir situation in Utah. Mr. Humphreys Hum-phreys suggested that we oppose any additional National Mom-ments Mom-ments along the Colorado River without tne provision being made for the construction of dams, power plants, "etc." According to Mr. Humphreys the Department of the Interior has now control over two or three dam sites within with-in the Jensen Monument on the Greenriver that will prevent the state, or others from constructing dams that are needed for power purposes for pumping water from the Colorado River Basin into other parts of the state. A resolution re-solution to Congressmen, Senators and the Governor of Utah will be drawn up, protesting the establishing esta-blishing of any additional monuments monu-ments along the Colorado River and its tributaries without first making provision for use of the areas in question. Another question to come up was the fifth column activities, and what can be done to combat this menance to American ideais. Another subject discussed was completing flying fields in Rich- installation of radio systems and lighting facilities. These matters will be left for the proper committees com-mittees to take action upon. The State Engineer expressed the opinion that work wilt soon oe started on a number of small reservoirs in Utah. He mention., the iac that the Department of the Interior refused to allow the State Officials to install measuring measur-ing devices on one of the streams in Zions National Paark. The department de-partment also refused to allow tne state to repair an old road through the park over which they desired to transport necessary machinery to construct a reservoir on the Kolob Mountain. This water is needed very much by the ! people of Washington County and according to the State Engineer it is a crying shame that not even : the slightest cooperation can be j secured from the Interior Department Depart-ment on such projects even where i the park interests are not injured i in the slightest degree. |
