Show Italy Endangered Rome Considering the great amount of discussion that centers around the possibility that Rome may suffer the ravages of war, it is well to remember that other centers cen-ters of civilization have been damaged without arousing complaints com-plaints on a world-wide basis. As the capital of a nation which declared war upon this country, the City of Rome cannot can-not be exempt from the risks that accompany belligerency. The fact that there are historic monuments in Rome and that the city contains considerable church property does not render Rome immune from the misfortunes of Italy. After all, if the Italian people and Mussolini were anxious to protect Rome, they should not have declared war upon the U-nited U-nited States. If Hitler and Nazi Germany want ot protect Rome, they should evacuate the city and transfer the zone of fighting to another area. The appeals now being made to the President of the United States to preserve Rome should have been made to Mussolini and the Italian people in 19-10 when Italy stabbed France in the back. We think this matter should be thoroughly discussed and understood under-stood in the United States. It may be that Rome will not become be-come a battlefield. On the contrary, con-trary, it may be necessary to drive the Germans out of the Italian capital. |
