Stamps help pay for national defense Defense Stamps May Now Be Purchased at Grocery Stores Mrs. Utah Housewife became an important factor in the national na-tional defense program this week when Uncle Sam and raemter stores of the Utah Chain Stores Association made it possible lor her to buy U. S. neiense savings stamps over the counter with her groceries, drugs, clot.iing and other everyday ev-eryday needs. Answering tie appeal al1 Secretary Sec-retary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau for "all out" cooperation coop-eration by the nation's retailers in America's defense effort, W. J. Hart of Salt Lake City, president pres-ident of the Utah Chain Stores Association, announced that defense de-fense savings stamps have been placed on sale in every member store in the state from St. George to Logan. Previously sold only by post oi.'fices, banks and other financial finan-cial institutions, the defense stamps will be purchased from the government by the chain retailers and resold to the public pub-lic at face value as a patriotic service, Hart said. Cooperation of all retailers in tne stamp sale program is sought by the Treasury Department, Depart-ment, Hart explained, as a part of a nationwide retailer drive by chain and independent merchants to stimulate the flow of public cash into defense cof-i cof-i ers and at the same time encourage en-courage Americans to save against possible emergencies in the future. Chain grocery, drug, department, de-partment, variety, shoe, apparel and even auto accessory stores are participating in the statewide state-wide effort to make consumers "defense stamp conscious", he declared, with newspaper advertising ad-vertising and store and window displays being utilized among chief promotional activity. Hart disclosed that a test sale of the savings stamps in Michigan, Michi-gan, jointly sponsored by the Michigan Defense S a v l n -g s Stamp Committee and tne Michigan Chain Stores Bureau, proved so successful that the Treasury Department decided to ask all retailers, chain and independent, in-dependent, to "go national with the program.
