Show Churchill Deserves Attention The warning note sounded by Winston Churchill at Fulton, Mo., should be heeded by the people of the three countries concerned in his illuminating discussion of probable future events. If ever a man deserves the ear of thinking peoole, when he gives voice to fears of the future, it is this same Churchill. For years, before the war broke out in Europe, he warned his people a-gainst a-gainst German designs and power, pow-er, for which they called him a war-monger. In his recent speech he outlined, out-lined, we believe, the simple truth when he said that the Russians Rus-sians do not want war but they do want the fruits of war. They are now in the process of picking the fruit in carious areas of the world and have cast covetous eyes upon the orchards of other people, including Turkey. The situation in Europe should not be hard to understand. Three great nations, through their combined com-bined power and fighting courage, cour-age, defeated the Germans. The continent was left helpless in their control. Almost immediately, immediate-ly, the strongest nation of the trio began a rapid retirement as American mothers, wives and tiuortioarts airlnrl and abetted bv some fathers and brothers, set up the chant heard around the world, "We want our boys home." Let us imagine that three boys, hungry and anxious to eat, suddenly sud-denly find themselves at a table, spread with many delicacies. One, somewhat oversized, wants more than his share. He is restrained re-strained by the presence of the pair. Then, the lagrer of the pair leaves the table, and goes home. What is there to restrain the natural, if unbridled, appetite of the larger boy left with a weaker companion? This is exactly what is happening happen-ing since American power was demobilized too rapidly after the collapse of Germany. It does not mean that the Russians are ready to take everything, or fight the world. It looks like the Soviet, however, wants to take everything every-thing it can get without fighting and obviously the quicker the leaders of the Communist state understand that, there is danger in going too far, too fast, the prospect for world peace will be brighter. It means that the United States must reveal its position in no uncertain words and let the British and Russtans know just when the interests of this nation na-tion are involved. It means that we must let nobody misunderstand misunder-stand our intention in regard to protecting our interests. In short, we must stake our area of interest inter-est and reveal whether we are playing a word-game or mean business. |
