Show Single Men Are Wanted In Navy Applicants for first enlistment in i.ie J. S. Navy to be accepted must be unmarried men between the ages of seventeen and twenty-rive twenty-rive yjais of age, who are In excellent ex-cellent physical condition, who are :of good moral character, who are citizens of the United States, and who can pass a mental examination examina-tion known as the General Classification Classi-fication Test. In the case of applicants appli-cants of less than 21 years of age, the parents consent must be obtained ob-tained in writing before the Recruiting Re-cruiting Officer or a Notary Public. I A boy can not just walk into the Recruiting Station and enlist. At least a month is required usually to complete his papers. His age must be verified by a birth certifi-: certifi-: cate or similar paper. His citizenship citizen-ship must be proved to be U. S. I The school grade which he completed com-pleted must be ascertained from , the principal of the last school ; which he attended. References must be obtained from reliable sources such as, school authorities, scout masters, clergymen, . employers, employ-ers, and prominent citizens. The applicant's finger prints are taken and the police authorities consulted consult-ed as to whether or not he has a police record. If possible, a representative repre-sentative of the Recruiting Officer visits the home of the applicants to make sure that the home conditions con-ditions are good from a moral view point, that no dependency exists, and that the parents are billing for the son to enlist. There is absolutely no chance of a boy enlisting without his parent's consent. con-sent. After an applicant has passed the required physical and mental tests, and has been sponsored by at least four representative citizens, citi-zens, his name is placed on the Eligibility List to await a call for enlistment. Some boys remain on this list for months before being finally accepted and seldom is a boy enrolled in less than two months after he makes out his application ap-plication papers. First enlistments are made only in the rating of apprentice sea men. The recruits are sent to the United States Naval Training Station Sta-tion at San Diego, California' for I a twelve weeks course of instruc-I instruc-I tion before being sent aboard ship While at the Training Station, they are provided free with a complete com-plete outfit of Naval clothing and paid $21.00 a month. Board and i lodging, of course, are also free. Near the completion of the re-:cruit re-:cruit training, a limited number of I men. who desire training as artificers arti-ficers and show aptUude for training train-ing as such, are selected to go to j the following schools which the jNavy maintains at San Diego: ra-i ra-i dio operators' school, electrical school, aviation mechanics' school, carpenters' school, machinists' school, musicians' school, buglers' j school, boilermakers' school, hos-i hos-i pital corpsmen's school and ship-i ship-i fitters school. I When the recruit training is j completed, the men are transferred to ea where they are rated sea-: sea-: roen second class with pay of J36.00 per month. Up to 100 enlisted men of the Navy and Marine Corps are selected se-lected each year for appointmen at Annapolis as the result of com- petitive examinations held on ship-beard. ship-beard. Such men must have been in the service at least one year and must not be over 20 years of age on April first of the year they enter the Naval Academy. As a result of the care which the Navy exercises in accepting recruits, only young men of the highest type get into the Navy. |
