Show Forest Notes j Personal Mention Engineer H. W. Sheely spent June 20-25 on the Mantl Forest. While here, he looked over the road location in the head of Muddy.. Mud-dy.. H a;so staked off the cut-off between the Cleveland Reservoir and the Fairview-Huntington road. Messrs. Carswell and Randall from the Bureau of Fisheries were visitors at the Gooseberry Camp on June 24, at which time plans were gone over with Forest officers offi-cers and foremen at the C.C Camp for local stream improvement. improve-ment. They also inspected work done along Indian Creek during the early part of June. The report cf their findings will ba awaited with interest. Forest Fire Prevention The following letter.frcm an eight-year old girl residing in Cedar City, was recently received by Forest Ranger E. P. Cox with the statement that Mr. Cox had told her school all about Forest Fires one day last winter while he was connected with the educational edu-cational activities at the COG Camps in Southern Utah. The letter follows: "Dear Sir: I am sure that we should all be glad if all Forest fires could be prevented. If some careless person should drop a lighted cigar cig-ar or cigarette in dry leaves or gras, there would soon be a fire starting, first by a little smoke and then more and more until there was a blaze. I think we should all at least try to keep the Forest looking beautiful and hope that no care less person will drop anything to start fires. Please try to prevent fires!" Roadwork Iceberg Roar Ranger Ollerton reports approximately approx-imately three miles of road completed com-pleted on the Clear-creek section of the Iceberg Road. The Cletrac working on that project was idle June 23, 24 and 25, awaiting ar rival of parts ordered from Salt Lake. Ferron Road The lower section of the Ferron- Canyon road between the boundary and the mouth of the Narrows has been completed and the CC Enrollees have moved back to the main camp In Gooseberry. Goose-berry. The road from the head of the Narrows to the Summit has recently been gone over with the grader so that it is now in fairly good condition. Range Conditions The Manti Forest ranges have been visited during the past two or three weeks with light show ers. The upper ranges are now looking good. The intermediate ranges on the east side of the plateau, however show the effects of the long dry-spell. On June 24, nice showers occurred along the Sanpete side of the mountain. Nearly one-half inch of precipitation precipita-tion was recorded at Manti. At Ephraim, 20-100ths of an inch of moisture was recorded, at Alpine only 10-100ths of an Inch of moisture mois-ture was recorded, and In Joe's Valley there was only a trace. The majority of our permitted stock is now on the range. Fish State Game Wardens have rec ently liberated a number of truck-loads truck-loads of fish in the streams within with-in the Manti Forest. Seely Creek, Snow Lake, Manti Creek and Ferron Reservoir have been stocked with fingerlings. It is planned to stock Emerald Lake In the head of the Muddy from the Federal Hatchery at Sprlngville just as soon as weather conditions are favorable and arrangements can be made for the necessary pack horses to transport the fish from the end of the road in Twelve-Mile Flat to the lake. Deer The State Fish and Game Offi cials were asked to take a tame deer from Palisade to the Spring-viUe Spring-viUe Game Farm. Deer make nice pets while young; as they grow older, however, they sometimes some-times become vicious. Two Mati boys recently captured captur-ed a young fawn in Manti Canyon. Apparently, the fawn had lest Its mother. It readily took condensed con-densed milk from a bottle so the boys have hopes of raising it on cow's milk. Water Developments A number of water developments develop-ments for stock watering purposes have recently been completed within and adjacent to the Manti Forest. The Mayfield Gunnison Irrigatio Company and Manti City have crews of men working in Twelve-Mile, Six-Mile, and Manti Canyons straightening out the channels and doing other improvement improve-ment work in an effort to increase in-crease the water supply of the streams mentioned. The people of Ferron are asking ask-ing for a special use permit to construct a new reservoir in Duck ) Fork.. I During the past spring, the j run-off from the Ferron Watershed Water-shed was considerably less than the Court Degree granted the i Ferron Irrigation Company, nearly near-ly fifty years ago. |
