Show Try a PYRAMID ADLET! (Farmers Urged To Select Seed David F. Smith. State Commi--sioner of Agriculture, is much con-i con-i cerned over the large amount of alfalfa alf-alfa seed that is being Imported I into Utah this year from states I that have a much milder climate than Utah. I Many experiments have been made using alfalfa seed frcm vari-,'ous vari-,'ous sources in an effort to detenu -.ine which strain will give best results. re-sults. The results of these experiments experi-ments have shown conclusively that alfalfa doee best when the seed is from a similar region to the cne where it is to be grown. Past experience with unacclim. ated seed has b:en that it will net long survive our winters. iAfter a year or two the stand is reduced to the point that it will not produce a profitable crop. Sometimes this reduction or stand is blamed on Bacterial Wilt when in reality it is winter killing due to warm climate seed. The law of the state of Utah provides pro-vides that all agricultural seed Imported Im-ported Into Utah from anothei state shall be plainly labeled to show the state of origin. Farmers should watch for this Information on all lots of alfalfa seed offered for sale. In a sample of alfalfa seed recently rec-ently collected in southern Utah by H. W. Gore, District Agricultural Agricul-tural Inspector there were 18 per cent of weed seed and 82 per cent of alfalfa reed. There was no label on this seed to show its purity; amount of weed seed; place of orjg- in or the dealers name. All this inviolation of the Utah Law which states that all agricultural agricul-tural seed offered1 for rale must be labeled to show name of seed; purity; pur-ity; percentage of weed seed; name, and numbr per pound of noxious weed seed; germination and date of germination test; name of country coun-try or state of imported seed and full name and addres- of vendor. Seed that contains any primary noxious weed seed or a total of more than one per cent of weed eeed cannot be legally sold in tha state of Utah. The State Department Depart-ment of Agriculture is trying- to enforce the law, so that the farmers farm-ers of the state will be protected in the purchase of seeds. |
