Show Chick Sexing Is Becoming Popular No single poultry development in recent years has created such widespread interest among the hatcherymen and poultry raisers as has the announcement that it is possible for almost anyone tJ determine the sex of baby chicks at the time of hatching, says Carl Frischknecht, extension poultry-man poultry-man of the Utah State Agricultural college. Just what effect the dissemination dissemina-tion of chick sexing information will have on the industry may not be determined for several years, but an increasingly large percentage percen-tage of the hatcheries are now making preparations to sell sexeci chicks the coming year. So far the method has riot proved prov-ed applicable to the average farm flock, nor is it considered of practical prac-tical value in the case of heavy breeds that are rased for thoit flesh. A chick sexing school and demonstrations dem-onstrations were held recently at the agricultural college at Lcgan ' in which the breeders and hatchers ' of the s ata participated. The - method of demonstrating how tc determine the sex of checks in these demonstrations is to study wax models showing the ganital eminence of the day-old chick. Each student is then given 100 ov more newly hatched chicks to sort over and he is graded according to the accuracy of his selection. In most cases an accuracy of 75 to 80 per cent is attained on handling hand-ling the first 100 chicks, and a good student can cxpe-c'; tf reach 90 per cent after examining about 5,000 chicks. A mimeographed pamphlet which gives the essential directions has been issued and copies may be obtained from the Bureau of Animal Ani-mal Industry, United States Department De-partment of Agriculture, Washington, Washing-ton, D. C. The poultry department depart-ment of the college will also supply sup-ply needed informat'on, sta'es Mr. Frischknecht. |
