Show Thomas Jefferson, Democrat On the 13th of this month, occurs the anniversary of the birth of Thomas Jefferson, in 1743. It is well for the nation to remember re-member the author of the Declaration Declara-tion of Independence and' the man who wrote the Statute for religious fredem in Virginia and succeeded in establishing the University of -Virginia. Thesa were the things for which he asked- to be remember, ed, although the epitaph that hi wrote for this monument made no mention of tire fact that he was twice the President of the United States. Jefferson was a democrat iwho believed be-lieved in and cherished his ideals. Incidentally, he regarded agriculture agricul-ture as the best occupation for men ancT th foundation of all other wealth. He was a scientific farmer in his day and constantly endeavored endeavor-ed to improve methods and introduce intro-duce new crops. It .might not be a bad idea for Americans, in this day, to become acquainted with the life, works and writings of Thomas Jefforsoa, the ''sage of Mcnticello." In his life and in his thoughts are lessons for us. all. |
