Show Grasshopper Control An early investigation of grasshopper grass-hopper eggs in the vicnity of Eph-ramv, Eph-ramv, Manti, Wales and Fountain Green indicates that a serious infestation of grasshoppers will occur during 1939. Two methods are recoimimended as a. means of grasshopper control. The one .miost practical to follow -t this time of the year, is to cultivate cul-tivate the soil along fence lines and ditches, around straw stacks and in stubble to a depth of at least five inches. Eggs were deposited de-posited in these areas in pods or masses by female grasshoppers in the late sumfr.er and early fall of .'ost year. Tnese pods are usually placed frcm one-half to three inches below the surface of the ground and contain from ten to a r.ur.dred eggs each. Plowing, spring toothing and cross-harrowing will disturb the pod and. expose the eggs to the drying action of sun ' nd wind, or uncover them to such an extent that the young grasshoppers grasshop-pers cannot hatch. Much good can be done in infested areas by cultural cul-tural methods. The second, method of control is in the scattering of poison bait. This will te available to farmers at cost for the protection of their crops this summer. Many thousands cf dollars worth of cro. s were destroyed last year by inadequate grasshopper control, and farmers are urged to protect; t .emselves against thu loss during I the coming season. I |
