LUND o - Beginning and End of Gold Standard -- - World s First Economic Conference King Nebuchadnezzar was the originator of the gold standard. Prior to his reign the Almighty, in his laws to Is-rael, had placed gold at the bottom, or as the least of (he things that make wealth. The king of Babylon raised it to first place. He erected an image of pure gold and then called together all the princes, governors, rulers, captains of in lustry, judges, treasurers, counselors, sheriffs, etc., to the world's first economic conference with the result that there was then established or set u,i the emblem of gold as the standard of eci ,mecramitalvity. In the conference there were three dis-senting voices, the three youn Hebrews, who knew the Isra-el standard so thorougly that they did not want a gold stand-ard to supei cede it. Because they objected king Nebuchad-nezzar had them cast into a fiery furnace. And thus was established precedent for punishing in various ways all those who oppose the gold standard. That was the birth; we of today are witnessing the death and burial of gold as a stand-ard or medium of exchange. For 2550 years the gold standard has enslaved humanity, caused all manner of suffering and caused rivers of blood to flow in the wars it has made. It has filled the world with woe and poverty and has always ministered to the well-bein- g of the few at the expense of the many. All the present ills of the world are atributable to it. It began to die in 1929, but the death rattle will last yet a few years to send tens of millions to their graves, and to keep the world filled with fear and want and destitution. Some Items Of Personal Interest Dr Francis Kirkhnm has our sincere sympathy because of the loss of his good andfcithful wife. May every day of the after years be sweetened by the memory of hpr fine life. The J. A. McCarthy family is enjoying the paper and has sent a yo ng man to the office to prove it. Friend Israel Barlow has a good companion in this paper which comes weekly to his lone-ly room. Fiiend and Neighbor Mrs. D. S. The Signs of The Times- - - Drift Of World Events PROPHESY MADE IN 1888 By James Stanley Little of England (Little was a noted man and spoke the above in Town Hall London 53 years ago to a very select audience of intellectuals) Home R de for Ireland Independence for India Refor m in England, with power from king and Lords usurped by the House of Commons England will suffer a savage internal struggle, with the Socialists gaining tha upper hand. The Aristocracy will be driven from the country and take refuge in South Africa. So-cialism will completely triumph in England, with property be-ing abolished, children being reared by the state and people 'iving in communal simplicity. Canada will leave the British Empire and join the U. S., and so will Mexico and all the South American and Central American republics. Germany and Russia will engage in a bloody war, in which Russia finally will be defeated. Finally European Russia, with Sweden and Norway will become part of Germany Australasia will grow in power and with the United States will dominate the Western Hemisphere. France will dissapear from the roll of nations. I Yach Forces Out to Destroy ' The forces that make for disunity and revolution are now working overtime in America and some of their activities are beyond the borderline of treason. They are dividing the peo-ple preparatory to the downfall of the Republic. They have done their worst to break down army and navy morale. They claim to have won many of the police forces of large cities to turn against the government when Coughlin and his fascist are ready to sttike and set up their kind of tyranny. The same kind of a crowd that betrayed, struck down, sold and delivered France are ready to do the same to America and they will stop at nothing, not even wholesale assasinations. They have "invaded"' this country ; they are ready and pre' pared and await the touch of a button to begin. But God help them when they begin! Add to all this the dark , spots and portents on the capital labor front. Mobocracy that will be nation wide is treading on the heels of many current events If one cannot see revolution in the offing he is somewhat blind to the drift of the times The forces mentioned never amalgamate with true Americanism. "It is the object of war only that makee it honorable. And if there ever was a just war since the world began, it is this v li; i V a;.-iiJ- i h i t i ; i ; I. 'Vj it not to enslave but to set free, and to make room upoD th3 earth for honett men tolive in." THE SEEKER -Emma Thompson Whipple Frm Her Forthcoming Book ,Th castle which the Seeker built, Of golden bricks "was made, With praise and pomp and richly power Its fine structure was laid. And as its splendid height arose, It shunned the homes below, Forgetting that not within itself Its height alone did grow. And as the star which crowned the tower, Was mounted in its place, Alas! destruction's ugly worm Was working at its base. The massive castle with its strength Fell crumbling to the ground, The humble homes still stood in peace, Close by the castle's mound. , And so it seems with mortal man If he seeks power to gain, That which he has will sometime go, He, broken will remain. While those who carefree, go along, With humble hearts and hands, Have not the riches of the world, But jewels with lasting strands. Gems of thought, a cultured mind, The peace on earth they found, Thev leave a memory sweet to all, The Seeker leaves his mound. American Waj Best "We have found by experience that American institution! serve our purpose better than those of any other country. We not only want to safeguard our freedom, but we also want security and abundance of the good things of life. We are told, however, by defeatists that we cannot have both. We must, they say, choose between freedom and security. They insist we must giv up one in order to gain the other. Let us not surrender to any such counsel of despair " ' HP at SiVSAJ. r-- Editorial (CONTINUED) there is my country. It is working out the plans of Destiny. No, the country has not apostatized from democracy nor has there been any determined effort to destroy the constitu-tion. The effort has been to make democracy work in the in-terest of all the people instead of the few. Like the bible which was once chained in the churches, the constitution has been brought out and interpreted for the welfare and interest of the common people. As long as it was practically a closed book and kept umler glass, as it were, and the racketeers of big business were running riot, exploiting the people and un dermining America it was allright. Just one illustration out of many will suffice to 3how how America was sold short and the people robbed by those who howled for the constitution. Andrew Mellon established a world monopoly in Aluminum and kept the product scarce and the price high. He permit-ted Germany special privileges to manufacture all she needed but America from doing so. With his robber prices he made millions. And no w, because of his actions this count-- ' ry is short and greatly handicapped. Mr. Mellon is one of thousands who have acted as racketeers against their govern m.'i.t. But oh how patriotic and saintly they were when standing for the constitution. Darter Free Lecture Moose Club Hall, 161 So 2 E Sunday. Oct. 12, 8 P. M. One Mightx and Strong. Advt. Looking into the future of the air industry and al defense, Commissioner Goggin ably supported and won approval of large improvements at the Salt Lake Airport. These valuable additions made the Airport the outstanding aviation center of the west and caused the federal government to choose Salt Lakp as the center of it's vast western defense expansion. To match federa funds appropriated for this new construction, Commiss-ioner Goggin took from his parks and public property de-partment budget. This has necessarily delayed his long range improv ement program of parks and playgroun Is but has result ed in the expenditure by the federal government of vast sums in this area. Practically all of the improvements made are of a permanent character and will do much to carry out the "KEEP THEM FLYING-- ' program.
