Show HOW CAN HIS FOLLOWERS BE AGAINST SOCIAL SECURITY? The I.L.O. (International Labor Organization), one of the arms of the League of Nations which has been functioning func-tioning throughout all the fateful years since the League's defeat. Representatives of forty nations have been holding a series of meetings in Philadelphia and the voices from that gathering should be stimulating and inspiring to the nation. Here is the definition they gave of Social Security : "Social Security means that those who are willing to work, if able, shall have from the reservoir of production all that is necessary to maintain a normal life. If sick, they should be cared for, if. they are young they should have made available whatever is needed to develop mind, body and soul. If they are old and unable to work, then those things they have done for us give them the right to their share of the wealth, the creation of which would not have been possible but for the work they did in the years that are past." And here is America's new Bill of Rights by F.D.R. "The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries, or shops, or farms or mines of the nation; "The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation; "The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living ; "The right of every business man, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monoplies at home or abroad ; "The right of every family to a decent home ; "The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity oppor-tunity to achieve and enjoy good health; .; "The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident and unemployment ; "The right to a good education." It does verily seem to us that such words stem directly from the spirit of the Sermon on the Mount. How any man who professes belief in the religion of Jesus can take a stand against the spirit and meaning of these words is beyond our understanding. |
