Show Utah County Escapes "Grim Reaper" During the Long Memoral Day Week-end against the unsafe acts of other drivers and pedestrians. You may think you or your neighbor are safe drivers or pedestrians, but the public at large contains others who reduce by at least half your chances of avoiding accident, injury or death in traffic. traf-fic. Therefore, your safe behavior is not enough; you need the defense de-fense of law and its enforcement, and each of us should take any necessary steps to insure this protection. How near we come to preventing traffic fatalities depends on the degree of personal responsibility that the public takes upon itself. So truly, traffic traf-fic safety be'gins at home. Each individual must be personally responsible. Mr. Dean suggested that each citizen take heed of Utah County's Coun-ty's safety slogan, "Slow Down and Live." Ernest Dean, Chairman of the Utah County Safety Committee,-announced Committee,-announced today that residents of Utah County escaped the "grim reaper" on the highways during the long Memorial Day weekend. He said that so far in the: county this year there has been only one traffic fatality as compared com-pared with four at this same time last year. Those four deaths in 1959 all happened in the month of May, whereas the county had been entirely free of traffic deaths up until that time. ':This just emphasizes the fact," he said, "that we can't relax or let down in our efforts to curb highway high-way deaths. Just about the time we are congratulating ourselves for our safe record, a rash of fatal accidents take place." Mr. Dean said that there are two things the individusJ must do to make traffic safe: (1) behave be-have safely himself, and (2) support sup-port official activities , including law enforcement and engineering improvements, to protect himself |
