Show Reading Course to Be Offered This Summer at PGHS Many of our students are finding find-ing their academic work very difficult dif-ficult because of their inability to read textbooks prescribed for their grade level. For example, a boy who reads on the fourth grade level lev-el will find a tenth grade history book way out of his reach; consequently con-sequently he cannot keep up with assignments, he loses interest, and ultimately fails in the lourse. This low reading ability is reflected in the lack of progress of many students stu-dents in most of our academic courses. After a careful study of test scores, both reading and language, the high school faculty feel that much help can come from a six-weeks six-weeks course, in study of fundamentals funda-mentals of reading. The student develops a sense of security and independence only after he feels that he has learned the fundamen-( fundamen-( Continued on page 8) Reading Course (Continued from page 1) tal processes. A list of students who are reading from two to three years below their grade level has been selected, and recommendation is being made to the parents to arrange for their registration for summer reading course. Anyone who is interested in improvement im-provement of his reading ability is invited to contact the counseling counsel-ing service at the local high school to arrange for registration. The latest date for applications to be considered will be May 15. Spring registration has been completed at the high school. Every Ev-ery effort has been made to permit per-mit electives where desired, faculty fac-ulty members say, but crowded classes and lack of room for newly organized classes has limited offerings of-ferings to some extent. Parents are encouraged to review the registration reg-istration of their students and be sure that classes selected for next year are satisfactory. If any adjustment ad-justment is desired, an appointment appoint-ment should be made with the counselor for interview and review of student's standing and possibilities. possibil-ities. At the same time tests of vocational vo-cational interest may be reviewed. |
