The First Baptist Church begun be-gun in October, 1955 as a Mission Mis-sion sponsored by the First Baptist Bap-tist Church of Provo. Its present pres-ent pastor, Gordon L. Elenbaas, was called to lead them in the work. On October 6, 1957 the Mission status was left and the Church was organized as such in good standing with and affiliated with the Salt Lake Association of Southern Sou-thern Baptists in the Arizona State Convention. In 1956 the Church set up a building program and made its first task that of securing adequate ade-quate property for a future building build-ing site. The summer of 1957 proved fruitful and an acre plus was purchased at the site of our present building program. Early in 1958 it became apparent ap-parent that the City of Pleasant Grove was going to have need of the building- being- used by the Baptist Church, so immediate plans were started for the building. build-ing. The Architectural Department Depart-ment of the Southern Baptist Convention in Nashville, Tenn. was contacted and given information inform-ation regarding the property, location, lo-cation, present need and future desires. Tliey sent back a proposed pro-posed plot plan drawing which has served as the basis for the present program. Being constructed at present is Unit No. 1, consisting- of a temporary tem-porary chapel, with seating capacity ca-pacity of 125, a Baptistry, 8 Sunday Sun-day School class rooms, kitchen, restrooms, and pastor's study. Unit 2, planned for further expansion ex-pansion will consist of a two-level two-level building to house Christian Chris-tian Education facilities and unit un-it 3 will be the permanent chapel chap-el with seating capacity of 300- . 350 and several additional Sunday Sun-day School classrooms. Building committee members are Clifford Williams, cliairman; J. Calvin Bullock, Noel Trimble, Carl Fullerton, Earl Eikman and Gordon L. Elenbaas. Reverend Elenbaas expressed thanks to Pleasant Grove City for making available the facilities facili-ties of the Old City Hall for the . use of the First Baptist membership. member-ship. He was also most appreciative of the assistance of the Bank of Pleasant Grove for making satisfactory satis-factory financial arrangements for the construction of the new church. "This is the first time that a local bank in Utah has assisted a church organization in suoh a building project," he said. |
