Show Larger Acreage For Green Peas Indicated Here Utah farmers are planting 8,000 acres of green peas for canning and other processing this spring an increase over the 1952 acreage that produced a total harvest of 14,000,000 pounds. C. W. Parry, Utah representative representa-tive of American Can Company, pointed out that processors buy and pack practically all of the peas grown commercially in the state. "The high percentage of green pea production for processing emphasizes em-phasizes the importance of the canning industry to the Beehive I oinea cigi icuilui ni euuuumy, saiu Mr. Parry, whose firm developed a method by which farmers determine deter-mine when to pick peas at their tenderest. "Last year's crop of peas for processing accounted for almost $200,000 in farm wages and brought growers a return of $641,-000 $641,-000 from canners and freezers." Greater acreage is devoted to green peas than to any other Utah canning crop, and the state ranks 11th among the nation's 30 important im-portant pea-growing states, the can-making firm's representative said. Utah county is the state's most important pea-growing area, followed fol-lowed in importance by Box Elder, Cache, and Weber counties, Mr. Parry said. |
