Show X Bracken Lee Was Sworm in Governor PJlon. J. Bracken Lee became Utah's number one citizen Monday when he took the oath of office and became the first Republican governor in 24 years. In a brief address as part of the inaugural ceremonies Governor Gover-nor Lee pledged his support to settle the economic unrest and to prevent excessive taxation and government waste. In elaborating on the economic unrest the governor stated. "None of is can really afford the luxury of carrying a controversy to the point that now exists between one of our large mines and labor. No one gains and everyone every-one loses unless accord is reached reach-ed within a reasonable time. If we consider only our own right, we hasten the day when that right is trampled in the dust of misunderstanding and discord." The governor reminded his audience that the "power to tax is the power to destroy. I aslt the people and legislators 6f this State to prevent demands upon government that will tend to destroy de-stroy us. Government, like busi-I busi-I ness or the home, has an income within which it must live. . . . To ease our burden, every branch of government should operate as I economically as any business." I Tin- new chief executive also J made a point of the fact that it i is his belief "that Utah has too jniany, rather than not enough laws. Our statutes bulge with i laws. ... So I .say to you, that , there may be virtue in the repeal of laws as there may be in their enactment." The Republican executive that will be surroundtd by a Democratic Demo-cratic legislature invited his own party legislators and those of the majority party to join him in a program for the benefit of all the people. To every Utahn Governor Lee said, "Finally, may I remind you that although I am your Govtrnor, this is your government. gov-ernment. Your obligation did not end on election day. You ; must be vigilant in helping me at 'all times to keep on the right ! track, to the end that I, in turn, may help you by steering a true course. I am anxious to give you an 'honorable, fair and efficient administration." |
