Show State Improves Fish Hatchery Methods j A new device, believed to be unique, has been perfected at the Springville State Hatchery and is one of several improvements improve-ments during the past year expected ex-pected to put more trout in Mr. Average Fisherman's creel next season. "This device takes advantage of the natural instinct of fish to run during spawn)ng season," according to M. J. Madsen, superintendent sup-erintendent of fisheries manage ment, Utah Fish and Game Com-1 mission,' Describing the innovation in a report to Director Ross Leonard, the fisheries supervisor said "It will aid materially in saving time and labor and contribute to greater production during spawning season". Other improvements accomplished accom-plished at the Springville hatchery hatch-ery during 1945 include: 1. A fry pond has been added to the system and new bottoms 5 have been poured into two of the older ponds, 2. A complete new drainage system has been built, making it possible to clean and drain each pond separately. Heretofore, the 4 ponds were connected and none could be drained and cleaned without harmful effect on all the other ponds. Net result: A much higher percentage in maturing ma-turing fry to legal size trout, |
