Show Theme Of National Education Week 'Education for Victory' "Education for Victory" is the general theme for the twenty-third twenty-third annual observance of American Amer-ican Education Week, November 7-13, 1943. Today, when we are engaged in a global struggle for freedom, we come to realize as never before the power of ideas in shaping the actions of men, and the consequent imporanee of the schools in the nation's victory program. All Out For Defense Despite many handicaps, the schools are doing a remarkable task in the all-important educational educa-tional aspect of the war effort. They have trained 5,000,000 adult workers for war indusrties; they are preparing succeeding graduation gradua-tion classes in the nation's high schools for the armed servces or for places in industry; they have accepted many extra tasks imposed im-posed by war needs. Meanwhile they have continued to carry their regular heavy load of responsibility responsibil-ity in preparing 72.000,000 boys and girls for the opportunites and resposibilties of American citizenship. citi-zenship. What We Are Fghting For Education is a vital part of the war effort. But even if education were not related to the immediate war effort, it would be a suicidal sec-iai policy to necrleet the schools in w-artime. To forsake the schools would be to neglect our children. And what are we fighting fight-ing for except the right of our children to live in a free world ? Education for victory is more than the provision of basic technical training and physical fitness to the end that we mav speedily be victorious vic-torious on the field of battle. Education Edu-cation for victory todav is likewise the preparation needed to provide an enduring victory in the years of difficult readjustments that mtist be made to secure the peace. |
