Show Marketing Hogs at Lighter Weights Conserves Feed In view of the present shortage short-age of feed supplies, S. R. Bos-well, Bos-well, county agent, advises Utah county hog raisers to market hogs at lighter weights than usual in order to utilize available feeds to the best advantage. "After a pig reaches 200-pound weight the amount of feed required re-quired to produce a hundred pounds of pork is greatly increased," in-creased," explains Mr. Boswell. Results of swine-fattening investigations in-vestigations reveal the following follow-ing information with respect to feed requirements to produce 100 pounds of gain by pigs at various weights from 50-100 pounds live weight, 375 of feed per 100 pounds of gain; 100-150 pounds 400 pounds of feed; 150-200 pounds, 435 pounds of feed; 200-250 200-250 pounds, 475 pounds of feed; and hogs from 250-300 pounds live weight require 535 pounds of feed to produce 100 pounds of pork. "Under average conditions, even more feed may be required per 100 pounds of gain than was needed by pigs in these trials," declared Mr. v, Boswell, "However, the relative increases in amounts of feed required to produce 100 pounds of pork as hogs increase in weight, would be approximately approximate-ly the same." "This increase in feed requirements require-ments per 100 pounds of gain in case of heavy hogs is due to the increase in maintenance requirements, require-ments, which must be met before feed may be utilized to put on additional gain," explains the county agent. Mr. Boswell also recommends that hog raisers spread their marketings over a longer period of time to avoid bottlenecks Jn |
