Show County AgenS: Urges Planting of Home Gardens On Thursday nionwig, March 23 . R. Loswtll, Utah County Agent, addressed the future laiTiiers at the local high school. Mr. Boswcll spoke on the r.ubject of Food Production Goals for Utah for 104a. As a preface pre-face to his speech Mr. Boswcil stated stat-ed that last year (1944,) larm production pro-duction in Utah was 45 per cent a-bove a-bove the average production for the years 1935-59 and that Utah was well ahead of the national art-rage in increased production. Some of the reasons for this increased production, pro-duction, he expalined are: l--farm-ers worked longer hours and harder , than ever before; 2--better farming practices; 3--favorable weather conditions con-ditions and 4--favorable prices. STiowing the need for continued high production of farm goods, Mr. Boswell pointed out the fact that each conquered country and every additional city taken becomes a direct problem of food supply for which our country' has a major responsibility. re-sponsibility. Outlining the goals for Utah for 1945. Mr. Boswell presented the following fol-lowing figures: Sugar beets to be increased So per cent. (Sugar is probbaly the most critical of the war foods and farmers who have ground and equipment suitable for beets are urged to raise them. Prices Pri-ces this year are as favorablj as they have ever been.) Alfalfa seed increased 50 per cent. Milk up 4 per cent. Grains about the same as last year with slight increases Tor wheat and Barley, and a decrease for oats. Potatoes the same as last year. Egg production to remain the same l" last year. Meat chickens should be increased 29 per cent. Hogs lip 30 per cent. Cattle and calves to be reduced 9 per cent Decrease in cattle is urged both to ' increase the present supplies of meat and to cut down on the record high number of breeding stock for post war supplies.. Sheep and lambs down 10 per cent. At present there is a year's suoly of wool on stock in our country. coun-try.
