Show City to Dedicate Monument as 85th Birthday Feature Early in the summer Dr. Howard R. Driggs of the Utah Landmarks association met with representative civic and church officials and Daughters of Utah Pioneers cf the Pioneer Cabin in the City Park. He talked of the different historic sites in our city and was especially anxious anx-ious to have a marker placed in honor of the historic first Indian battle in Utah at Battle Creek canyon can-yon which took place on February . 28, 1849. A committee, composed of M. S. Christiansen, Junius A. West and S. A. Kirk was selected to take charge of the work. Later Earl Loader Load-er was added to this committee representing rep-resenting the city council. At first it was decided to build the monument monu-ment of blue limestone from Battle Creek canyon, but after investigating materials it was decided to use qu4rtsite, an everlasting material, for the monument. The Adult Aaronic Priesthood members, under direction of James H. Walker, did most of the work under direction of Chris Olson of Provo, who is an artist in this line of work. As a result a beautiful ten foot shaft now stands on a substantial 10x10 foot base of cement, on the parking lawn of the City Park, 60 feet north of the southwest corner. The location is one of the best in our city, being on the State highway so that tourists and other travelers can read the inscription. From plaques, one on each side of the monument, will be placed later. The first one will commemorate the first Indian battle and the other will tell of other important events in the early history of Pleasant Grove. Next year a smaller marker will be placed at the battle site near Battle Creek canyon. The following program will be rendered on the City Park lawn near the monument this evening (Friday) on the 85th birthday of the settlement of Pleasant Grove. M. S. Christiansen will be in charge of the program. Music by High School Band, under direction of Ford M. Poulson. Opening prayer, Bishop J. A. West. ,. Music, band.
