Will Robinson Robin-son this week was attempting to secure se-cure preference for Utah laborers on the Deer Creek project. Congressman Robinson, launching Ids fight In the interest of Utah labor, discovered that, while the specifications carry the wage scale which must be observed on the Deer creek project, the statute does not require employment of only local labor. With the reported backing of both Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ikes and Reclamation Commissioner John C. Page, Mr. Robinson changed chang-ed his course to a direct appeal to the company, which probably will be awarded the contract as low bidders. The company, by voluntary agreement, may assure employment of local men. Representative Robinson took up the campaign after leaders in his home state had urged him to secure exclusive Utah labor on the Deer creek dam construction. It had been reported that the company was preparing to Import several hundred laborers from the Pacific coast. Mr. Robinson's communication to the company follows, In part: "The people in Utah and Salt Lake counties have been looking forward to the construction of this project for a number of years, and naturally they are delighted to know that actual work will soon begin. "It seems to me that under such conditions as now exist in Utah and especially in Utah and Salt Lake counties, you should be willing to use the labor that is available within with-in the state of Utah. "I am satisfied that you will always al-ways be able to obtain ample labor In Utah for this project and this labor, both for common, ordinary work and for skilled labor will be of the very highest type that can be found anywhere. "In the light of present conditions, I would feel justified in opposing the granting of the contract to any firm which would not give assurance assur-ance that it would give preference to Utah workmen. "I should like very' much to have a statement from you before the |
