Show not heard of it till that day. Then Abraham presented Abimelech with sheep and oxen, and made a covenant. But he held back seven ewe lambs, and gave them as a witness wit-ness that he had dug the well, wherefore the place was called Beer-sheba; Beer-sheba; being the place where the covenant was made. HANSEN BEERSHEBA Beersheba (well of the oath) the name of one of the old places in Palestine which formed the southern south-ern limit of the country. At this place Abimelech, king of Gerar, of the Pnilitines, with Phichol the chief captain of his host, met Abraham Abra-ham for the purpose of making an alliance. The king acknowleges that God is with Abraham in all that he undertakes, and because of this fact, urged Abraham to make a vow that he would not deal falsely with the king, saying: Now therefore there-fore swear unto me here by God, that you will not deal falsely with me, nor my son, nor with my son's son: but according to the kindness that I have done unto you, you shalt do to me, Abraham said, I will swear.
