Show C C C Camp News RAY S. MERRIL, Exporter On July 6th, Captain Edwin H. Mayfield, 400th Infantry, 100th Division, Di-vision, was assigned to Company 2514, Pleasant Grove, Utah. Captain Cap-tain Mayfield's home is in Louis-1 ville, Kentucky. For the past two years he has been commanding officer offi-cer of Company 588, Forth Ancient, Ohio, Company 553. Yellow Springs, Ohio, and Company 1519, Pikeville, Kentucky. i Captain Mayfield has expressed j himself as being very pleased to be ' assigned to this company. Captain B. E. Taber is happy to have a man ; of Captain Mayfield's type assigned to this company, especiallly with the men so scattered in spike camps and the additional responsibility such as it brings. On Tuesday, Father Lamb, chap-I chap-I lain of the Ninth Corps area, made I a visit to our camp. Immediately I following, the whole camp was called together and Father Lamb gave a i talk on Character Building, which , was followed by a picture show which everyone enjoyed. After the ! show a period was devoted to con- I I fession for all the Catholic boys of : the camp. On July 9, 43 new enrollees ar-. ar-. rived at Pleasant Grove from Fort Knox, Kentucky .bringing the total ; strength of the company to 150. Most of the new men. are from Ak- ron and Youngstown, Ohio. The whole camp bids them welcome. Every Monday and Friday evening eve-ning a truck load of enrollees motor to Lehi where the boys spend the evening roller skating. Captain Taber has elected Joe Haring as the officer's new orderly. The officers are all well pleased with him. I Clifford B. Smith, who is the c j company's pianist, left for Akron, Ohio, on July 14th, where he has I acccepted a position to play over station WADC. Edward Wilkihs, senior foreman, recently made a visit to Soapstone camp. While there, he inspected the grounds and living quarters and reports, re-ports, a very satisfactory camp. Since the company's strength is ' j back to normal a few changes have been made concerning leaders and assistant leaders. Enrollee Joe T. ; Chorniak, who has been a cater- pillar driver for the forest service, has been selected as a leader. Anthony Fischio, who has been in charge of the company post exchange ex-change for the last ten months, has accepted the very responsible position posi-tion of mess sergeant, making his rank that of a leader. Other ratings are: Emith Jones, from assistant leader to leader; Roy Briner, Lonnie Valentine, and Wil-ford Wil-ford Simonson, from members to assistant leaders. Walter Duden, who was taken into the army office a few weeks ago has been assigned to the position as company clerk, which gives him the rating as assistant leader. Edwin Mart, the company supply sergeant, has been advancecd from assistant leader to leader. Enrollee Benjamin H. Anthony just received word he has been chosen chos-en as army truck driver at Fori Douglas and will take his new assignment as-signment on Friday, July 17th. Forrest C. Fulk, who has been mess sergeant for the past four and a half months, left Friday for his home in Spencer, Indiana, where he will receive his army commission as Second Lieutenant. The following safety measures have taken effect concerning fire protection and smoking in all CCC organizations, including all spike camps- No smoking will be allowed al-lowed except in camp or in instances where the person is at rest, and it is absolutely safe. r |
