Region 8 dominated the tournament, tourna-ment, finishing with five teams in ie top eight places. Leading 13 to 11, P.G. saw Granite add four straight to close the gap within 2 points. But Estes served two more, and that was all that they need to win. In game two, The Farmers scored first, then both teams shifted into neutral, trading several sev-eral serves without adding to the score. After Traci Williamson served two for the Vikings, Granite came back to tie the score. Then Vikki Allred served four straight to give the Vikings the lead as the Farmers lost a key player with an injury at the net. Granite struggled to adjust without her blocking and hitting, but never recovered. P.G held on to the lead with their strong net play, and won. Spanish Fork came to the tournament tour-nament to win, as they have all year, and were especially gunning to beat P.G. because of their loss to P.G. during state last year. Pleas ant Grove suffered against Spanish Span-ish Fork's very strong hitting. P.G. lost, and went on to play against Skyview for the third and fourth place spot. In commenting on The Viking's tournament play, Coach Marie Bone observed that the defense in the first two matches against Bear ' River and Granite was, "the best -they had played all year." She said that the loss to Spanish Fork was difficult, because it tended to make it hard to come back, once their bid for first place was gone. Coach Bone said that they never expected to go as far as they did, as the season had started slow, but ended very well. She said that she was proud of the players and their hard work and dedication they have had this season. |
