Show Restoration work begun after fire ' Restoration work started last Jurday on the Uinta National Forest to repair the damage caused L fire and flooding above Lindon. Emergency funds have been made Liable for this project and the lrk will be done by Lindon City, L Conservation Service and Uinta National Forest. Heavy rains resulted in erosion of the steep slopes and severe cutting of the Dry Canyon drainage. As a s result, spring collection boxes were filled with ash and sediment; water lines were undercut, exposed and broken reducing the amount of water to Lindon City. Water is currently being pumped from wells to meet the demands of city water - users. . Restoration and protection work wiU provide stability to the watershed and stream channel. i:j Relocating the water collection boxes and pipelines will reduce s future damage and water pollution. The 1457th Division of the Utah National Guard from American Fork began hauling rocks to fill gabions (wire baskets) which will protect the channel and new improvements. im-provements. Lindon City will install a new water collection line and water transmission line in the next 30 days. Reseeding will also be a part of the restoration effort. On Monday, Sept. 28, seed was distributed by helicopter over the entire area that was burned. The seed mixture consisted of several different species of grass, forbs and browse, that are preferred by wildlife and also provide watershed protection. The area is still extremely fragile and problems continue to occur with illegal use of Off Road Vehicles. Rutting and erosion caused by these vehicles will greatly impact the reestablishment of vegetation and ground cover. Citizens are urged to report offenders of-fenders to the Utah County Sheriff's Office, or to the Forest Service. |
