Dr. Cox said there is concern always when one association signs ahead of the others, but negotiations are based on the needs of the organization. Each association stands by itself, he said, and "we will not re-open the contract regardless. It's hard in education to do this but this is what happens in industry -- the carpenters union doesn't get the same as the plumbers union, etc." Classified employees are non-certified non-certified (non-teaching) personnel who provide support to the educational system. They include transportation workers, technicians. secretaries, school lunch workers, custodians, etc. Donna Sandstrom, vice' president of the Alpine Classified Employees Association, said following the board meeting, "After careful scrutiny and considerable negotiation, it was felt that the classified employees would best be served by settling at this time." Dr. Richard Sudweeks, board president, said the board is pleased to "reach agreement with the classified employees," and "we can now focus our attention on educating the kids.
