Show Sophs blank West High for big win The Pleasant Grove sophomore team opened the season Thursday in Salt Lake against West High and came away with a 37-0 shutout win over the Panthers. Chad Fraughton took a pitchout from Russ VanDyke and put the Vikes on top 6-0 in the first period. The point after was wide. Fraughton broke a big 60 yard run for another touchdown in the second period and Mike Hanks booted the point after for a 13-0 PG lead. Hanks added a 32 yard field goal, making the score 16-0 at halftime. West's only serious drive of the first half was halted by Darren Brown when the Viking strong safety picked off a long pass and returned it 30 yards before the half ended. Third period action saw Darrin Henry and Tyler Cluff combine for a strange scoring play. Henry carried to the one yard line and reached to put the ball through the plane of the goaline. One official started to signal "touchdown," just as the ball was knocked loose into the end zone. Cluff, an offensive tackle, pounced on the ball to ensure en-sure the six points. VanDyke, who ran the offense very well for the first game, made the option to go in the third period with another pitch to Fraughton, who scored from six yards out. David Shephard added another touchdown in the third period as the Vikes broke the game wide open with Hanks and Jeff Swenson each kicking extra points. Every one of the 45 dressed sophs had a chance to play in the final quarter and a half and many showed promise as players for the future. "The game was close in the first half and I really thought it would be a dog fight in the second half, but West seemed to give up after our second third period touchdown," said Jack Hill, Viking sophomore coach. The sophs host Spanish Fork today in Viking Stadium. Last year, when the players were ninth graders, the two teams battled for two overtimes before the Vikes won. Game time is 4 p.m. : |
