Show Grove Creek level down since overflow The water level in the Grove Creek flood control basin has dropped several feet since it reached its peak and overflowed down the spillway on May 30. P.G. City Officials say that some of the rain storms of the past few days have raised the level of the water for a short time but it has gone back down again. City crews became a bit anxious last Wednesday when the water level in the Battlecreek basin began to rise at rather a fast clip. Crews cleaned a major drain pipe from the basin which had been clogged and the water level began dropping ' almost immediately. As a precaution, watermaster Bob Oscarson diverted some water down 200 S. and into the North Union Canal and also allowed some of it to flow into an orchard where it was expected to be absorbed by the ground. At present the city is keeping the sandbags in place on streets and around homes until it is deemed to be past the flood possibility stage. The flood control basins are checked regularly and the drainage ditches are dredged as necessary. The ditches are handling as much water as they can and pipes are diverting the excess runoff into the Murdock Canal. Water has not been running down 500 N. since the water went over the spillway May 30 and 31. Mayor David Holdaway said that more sandags could have been used and a lot more water could have been diverted down 500 N. if it had become necessary. He said that Pleasant Grove is protected somewhat from heavy runoff from Timpanogos because most of the melting snow goes into the Provo River and the American Fork River which keep it away from the city. The mayor indicated that no total figures on the cost of fighting the flood waters has been made yet but he believed it would stay under $10,000. If no further flooding occurs, he said, all that will remain to do will be the clean up. The piles of gravel which have been dredged from the ditches will have to be removed, roads cleared of debris, and sandbags emptied with good ones being saved and others being discarded. The pipes which have diverted the excess runoff into the Murdock Canal will probably be removed. Mayor Holdaway stated that the city has been fortunate so far in not suffering any serious damage but emphasized that the volunteer help of citizens, contractors, city employees and others had been responsible. |
