Show Three win trips to International Special Olympics Three students at Peterson School for the handicapped will be going to the 1983 International Special Olympics Summer Games in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, July 12-18. To qualify for the team, a contestant con-testant had to have competed in the 1982 Utah Special Olympics, and been nominated by his or her coach for the team. Nomination of the athletes had to be cleared through the child's parent or guardian, school or organization, and other authorities. TROY RASMUSSEN, Special Olympics International team member Stephen Hollis, Pleasant Grove, and Darren Ford, Orem, will be competing in the meetings along with Troy Rasmussen, Alpine, who was selected as an alternate. Stephen and Troy both compete in gymnastics, with Darren in team basketball. DARREN FORD, Special Olympics International team member They have to be 10 years of age or over, and physically and mentally ready to travel by airplane thousands of miles from home without being accompanied by parents, family or friends. They also have to possess social skills necessary for an activity of this kind. Selection of the Utah 1983 International In-ternational team was made by a special committee at the state office of Utah Special Olympics. It will cost each team member about $400 to participate including transporation, uniform and other miscellaneous expenses. Although the Special Olympics will cover the entire onsite cost for each participant, sponsors are being sought to help. Anyone wishing to assist with a donation to the Special Olympics may do so by contacting the Peterson School. ; . Leila Ogden, physical education teacher at Peterson, will be one of nine coaches from Utah to attend the meet. - . ., "It is really special to be selected to attend the International Special Olympics," said David Adamson, principal at Peterson, as he congratulated the boys on their selection. |
