Show Students To Get No More Stamps A new U.S. Department of Agriculture report shows that recent changes in the Food Stamp Act have eliminated most college students the food stamp program. The Food Stamp Program Amendments of 1980, enacted by Congress last year, made students ineligible for food stamps unless they have dependents, are elderly or disabled, or already work. At one time, over 200,000 students received food stamps. Students now comprise only two-tenths of one percent of the food stamp case load. More than half of all students remaining on the program are heads of households who support dependents. depen-dents. Most of those are single mothers supporting children with the help of Aid to Families with Dependent Depen-dent Children (AFDC) while they attend at-tend school to gain skills that may enable en-able them to get off welfare and into regular employment. More than one-sixth one-sixth of all students receiving food stamps are elderly or disabled. One-tenth One-tenth are working; over three-fourth of them work full-time in addition to attending school. |
