Show WORKERS Genealogical Workshop instructors are back, Cecil Dimick, Dale Pomeroy, Michael Bryce, and Ann Nordstrom. Front, Doris Steen, Donna McGee, Hazel Roberts, Vanza Ekins, and Doris Booth. They urge people to start their genealogy work by taking classes. Genealogical Workshops Expand Format at BYU Branch Library Genealogical Workshops Work-shops held the first Sunday of each month at the BYU Branch Library will begin a vastly expanded format for-mat this week. Beginning Begin-ning January 7 the library will be open from 1:30 to 7:30 p.m. offering a variety of helps to genealogists from novice to experienced. ex-perienced. Under the direction of Donna McGee, Director of Genealogical Workshops, Work-shops, the library will have the following services ser-vices availalbe. Tours will continue to be offered to those people visiting the library for the first time. They will be conducted con-ducted each half hour by capable tour guides. The purpose of the tours is to introduce people to the library and the facilities that are available there for genealogical research. A large staff of consultants con-sultants will be available to work with individuals on specific problems. Consultants specialize in all regions of the United States and many foreign countries. These people have extensive experience ex-perience within their specific areas and willingly donate their time in helping others solve difficult research problems. The Microfilm area will also be open for those people who wish to do some actual research. There is a large collection of L.D.S. records, all U.S. Census records from 1790 to 1880, some British census records from 1841 to 1871, amny U.S. and some foreign newspapers and many passenger lists. A microfilm copy of the holdings of the main card catalog of the Genealogical Library in Salt Lake City is also available and for a small fee films may be ordered from Salt Lake for use at BYU. One of the new programs starting in January will be a Four-generation Four-generation Continuing Workshop. This workshop is a teaching method where all lessons pertaining to four generation research resear-ch are available at the same time and emphasis em-phasis is on completing assignments rather than listening to lectures. lec-tures. Each lesson is presented at a different table or area, and the students move from table to table as rapidly as they complete com-plete the assignments. These classes will be geared for the begin ning researcher who is interested in completing com-pleting his Four generation assignment but does not know how or where to start. Each month the workshop will feature special classes or lectures lec-tures as well as film strips pertaining to the purpose of genealogy. Beginning in January, and continuing for several months, Mr. Don Norton, will be conducting classes on "How to Write Your Personal History." Mr. Norton's experience includes in-cludes writing and editing of Church handbooks han-dbooks and other training materials, extensive ex-tensive writing of personal per-sonal and family histories, and 20 years as an instructor of basic and advanced writing courses. He is presently Director of the Writing Laboratory at BYU. |
