Show Vikings Win Game, Play Box Elder 8:10 With a Viking team which took second last year to Bingham in the 3A tourney, and then lost every letterman on the team, Keith Allred was faced with a task this year of just breaking even and some even thought his team might be down on the bottom of the region standings. Well, after breaking even in season league play with 8-8 the Vikings also won their first fir-st state tournament game against Judge Memorial 49-47 Tuesday afternoon. However, it took some heroics and a sub from the bench who made six of seven field goals, five of them in the last nine minutes, to keep the Vikings ahead. Kevin Peay, junior sub, came in and played like a veteran in the reserve role, and Allred said "that's probably the way he plays best. The excitement seemed to be all in the last minute as Judge made three straight misses from the free throw line and dropped from 40-37 to 46-37 with 1:02 to go. The Vikings seemed to lose their cool as the Judge team started its run at the 50 second mark. A three point play, followed by two free throws by the Vikings and another three point play by Judge and a Bulldog layup, made it 48-45 with 28 seconds to go. A free throw for the Vikes with 18 seconds left and a seven-second layup by the Bulldogs made it 49-47. The Bulldogs then missed a desperation shot. Peay, with 14, Keate with 12 and Ratliff with 11 led the Vikings to victory. The Vikings will lay off tomorrow and play again Thursday, this time in the evening at 8:10 in the championship cham-pionship bracket against Box Elder. Should they get by this one they will probably face American Fork, who plays Davis at 4:10 on Thursday also. Provo is in the other bracket, and is playing Logan at 8:10 last night (Wednesday). |
