Show STRONG ARMS Kely Duke, Joel Brady, Kevin Birrell, Doug Parry, Verlyn Ashton, and David Hansen are the pitchers for the Viking baseball team who are in playoff. Vikings Beat Lehi, In Playoff Kelly Duke pitched two-hit ball, struck out ten Pioneers, giving up but one run as Pleasant Grove beat Lehi 7-1 last Thursday to qualify for a Region VI playoff game today. In the Lehi game, a com-' bination of five Viking hits, three Pioneer errors and some "wild" Lehi pitching produced seven Pleasant Grove runs. Brent Pulley drove in a pair of runs to run his season's RBI total to 19 while Greg Carson went two for three with a live inning home run. Team leader in four categories, hits, runs, on base average and batting average (.385) Craig Carter had one hit in three at bats. Carter has come on in the last half of ihe season and is playing excellent ball. The Viking pitching staff (photo) now have a combined season total of 11 wins and 8 losses. As a group they show a 2.74 earned run average plus 118 strikeouts in 128 innings. Duke leads w ith a 4-0 record and Verlyn Ashton has the best ERA at "l .48. Today's playoff game is with the winner of the A.F.-Payson game played Tuesday. Payson fell into the three way playoff al ter a Monday trip to Uintah to play a protested game. Earlier in the year with Payson at bat, men on first and second, and Uintah leading 3-1, the Payson batter lined a ball Ihat struck !'"' '-'.nil-.- rule was misinterpreted concerning just what should happen and the Payson batter was sent back to hit again, this time grounding out. Apparently the rule reads that a batter goes to first and the runners advance one base. Whatever, Payson won the protest, traveled to Uintah Monday, resumed the game with bases loaded and got beat 7-1! All three teams, A.F., Payson and P.G. finished with identical records of 5-5 and Viking Coach Jon Hoover won the toss, taking the first round bye in the playoff. The playoff site is at Spanish Fork with game time set lor four p.m. today. |
