Trio pulled in 38 rebounds between them in Springville win. Vikings Over Devils By Dell Young & Jack Hill Pleasant Grove downed Springville 62-5- 8 last Friday. The win moved the Vikings into a second place tie in Region VI. Both teams came into the game with identical 2 records, each needing to win to stay in contention and each squad seemed loose and con-fident during the warmup. Viking Ray Green got the tip and Tom Strasburg scored on a followup shot. P.G. opened in a zone defense that allowed the Vikes good rebounding position to trigger a blistering first quarter fast break and lead 18-1- 2 at the quarter. Midway through the second period, Springville inserted 6 ft. 5 in. Wayne Davis and the Vikes suddenly went cold. A three minute dry spell allowed the Devils to go ahead 31-2- Strasburg tied the game but Davis put Springville back on top with a pair of free throws. Richard West hit a free throw for P.G. and got the ball out of bounds on a Springville "miscue" with :07 in the half. West and Whiteley got the ball to Green who scored as the half ended with P.G. on top 34-3- Both Pep Clubs put on a great half time show. Springville switched to a 3 zone and the Vikes went into a man to man as the half started. The strategy worked for Springville and they moved to a four point lead after five minutes and still lead 46-4- 4 at the end of the third quarter. Strasburg tied the game to open the last period. It was that type of game from then on. Coach Allred switched to a zone attack and sent Layne Butt past a Green screen to the corner while Butt either hit the outside shot or passed to Green on the inside. With the Vikes up by five with 3 minutes to go, Springville took a time out and again changed its defense. This time they tried a half court zone trap which P.G. countered with two Green free throws and baskets by Green and Kaylon Whiteley. Whiteleys baskets iced the Viking victory. Viking Coach Keith Allred felt the "team came through in the clutch" and was impressed with the way "thekids played together" in the win. ' Richard West came off the bench to play a good floor game plus hitting 3 out of 4 from the line. P.G.'s best percentage shooter, Kay Swenson, hit 4 out of 8 in addition to rebounding very well. ...i Silk" ' - r 'J PIN Carl Christensen chanks on the figure "four" in the 187 lb. match against the Springville team. Matches ranged from 3 draws to wild scoring ex-changes and a pair of pins, one by each team. Springville gained a 0 edge with a pin in the second period of the first match and stretched the score to 11-- 2 with a draw and decision in the next two. Kevin Green pulled the Vikes back to 11-- 8 on the strength of a first period fall at 121 lbs. while Kurt Faux rallied to a draw with a late third period reversal and a two point near fall. Kim Harris besting "Viking" Carl Christensen 18-1- With the heavyweight match to go, P.G. held a slim 22-2- 1 lead. Newsletter Funding COG officials approved fund-ing for a newsletter and a monthly bulletin that would help keep officials aware of state and federal legislative changes involving their organization. It was proposed to the of-ficials that an additional planning aide be hired to assist the various municipalities with their planning needs. After a lengthy discussion the council agreed to set aside sufficient funds for this, based upon approval by the various city councils. The planning aide would receive $10,00Q per year in addition to fringe benefits that would increase the actual salary to $11,836. Arlan Sperry, executive director for COG said, "This is for a planning aide. You'll never, ever get a planner for $10,000 per year." He added that additional funds would be necessary to cover supply and travel expenses for the new aide. The council also ap-proved formation of a legislative committee that would act as an advisory group to COG on legislative matters, state and national, that pertain to Utah County. Howard Nielson, former state speaker of the house, was selected by COG officials to act as chariman of the committee. Officials emphasized the committee would not function as a lobbying group unless directed by COG. |
