Show Padts Wins Suvitdfionsi Teuraqr 1-0 Over Phillips Packs young pitcher, Alan Green, who allowed but two hits 'in 10 innings, mixed his pitches and struck out the next two before walking Cooper. With men on first and second, Ben Woolsey hit a sharp ground ball to Shortstop Wes Duvall, who fired a perfect strike to Atkinson at first. The play was extremely close, and depending on who you were rooting for, could have gone either way. The ump ruled the sliding Woolsey out, thus ending the game and reversing last years results. Whether it was the cool air, humidity or just plain great pitching, both Green and Barnes were superb. The ball seemed alive from both pitchers. pit-chers. There were but 7 hits in the ten inning game and both catchers had trouble handling the "down" and "up" pitches. Alan Green threw 33 innings in the tourney without giving up a single run and was voted the most valuable player award. In winning the championship, Packs beat Mitchell Hollow, Pecks, Red Topper and Phillips twice. Phillips reached the final game with wins over Rasmussen, Dougs TV, Kazco and Carters. Invitational Softball tourney last Friday Aug. 1, 1975. In what must be classified as a "great 10-inning pitching duel," both teams played scoreless and almost flawless all for nine innings. Only two errors were recorded, one charged to each team, and those had no bearing on the outcome of the game.. It wasn't until the top of the fourth inning that the first hit was recorded. With two out, Pack centerfielder John Beck, singled but Phillips pitcher, Marvin Barnes struck out the next hitter, retiring the side. Packs went down in order in innings 5 and 6 and in the seventh, Alan Green singled sharply to right. The right-fielder right-fielder "booted" the ball, allowing Green to reach second, but again Barnes recorded one of his 11 strikeouts to end the inning. Phillips had two baserunners on second, one on an error, the other on a walk. A pop to Catcher Jay Walker ended that threat. Great pitching and a flawless defense put Phillips down in order in innings 3 through 8. It was in the bottom of the ninth that Phillips mounted the Tourney Notes After watching one of the teams from the southern half of the county, one spectator "jokingly" commented ".They play an hour and forty-five minute time limit in their league, they play ball for an hour and fight for forty-five minutes." I didn't think he was joking. Kazco and Phillips played Wednesday in a terrific wind. 26 strikeouts were recorded by both pitchers as Phillips won 3-0. 3-0. Orem 36th, burning the candle at both ends by playing in two tourneys at the same time, were forced to forfeit out of the P.G. Tourney when both games came up on the same hour last Thursday. Craig Carter, talented young shortstop for the Carter team, was in my opinion "missed" by the All-Slar selection committee. com-mittee. Craig had a great tourney, going 11 for 26 for a .423 average. He had two doubles, four triples, two RBFs and nine runs scored. Great job, Craig! P.G.'s league is very competitive. com-petitive. Four of the final 8 teams in the 16 team tourney were from P.G. Dell Young, Bill Hoglund and the umpires are to be congratulated for another outstanding city tourney. before falling to Phillips on the final night.
