Show Strawberry Days Celebration Moves Ahead with Committee Strawberry Days kicked off today, Thursday, June 17 for the 51st or 50th time in Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove. Last year we had the 50th celebration, though some of the oldtimers debated the point, and this can be another an-other 50th celebration or the 51st, according to whose side you are on. The celebration for the past few years has been under the auspices of the Strawberry Days Association, Inc., a het-erogenious het-erogenious organization composed com-posed of one or two representatives represen-tatives from Pleasant Grove City, Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, Sportsmans Club, the LDS Church (both stakes) the Kiwanis Club, Lions Club, the Riding Clubs of the area, the Garden Club, the Elysium Club, and some members at large, selected by this group. Since the days when the C of C realized it was too big a responsibility for just one club, or group, and the organization was informed to include all active organizations in the city, the citizens have gotten behind be-hind the "Days" much better and the celebration has prospered pros-pered and grown, and stabilized stabiliz-ed to a good community celebration. cele-bration. Chairmanship of the organization organi-zation has been selected either from among the members appointed ap-pointed from these separate organizations or-ganizations or from somebody "fool" enough to want to work their heads off for a community commun-ity celebration, and get no pay and very little accolades. They do however, get "cussed" a little. Jim Hindley and Clive Beck have been chairmen together to-gether for the past three or four years, and are looking for a new chairman to replace themselves. They have worked diligently, and are to be highly complimented for the job they have done, and the high type of celebration they are now bringing to Pleasant Grove. Perhaps not all of our citizens citi-zens agree that the ce' ".:ation is the best thing for our city, but none can deny that it has brought attention to our city, and what we can do. A sense of civic pride is evident in our "tooting our horn" for the best celebration in Utah. Parades, rodeo, games, carnival car-nival and fun, what better can we ask to take a week off and enjoy a city celebration. Citizens Citi-zens should join in today and Friday and Saturday and make Pleasant Grove's annual Strawberry Straw-berry Days successful again. Our hats are off to a fine group of citizens who work to make this possible. |
