PLEASANT GROVE REVIEW RENEW YOUR SUBSCRIPTION TO THE REVIEW P.G. HOMECOMING SPOILED BY PAYSON by Shaun McCausland The Payson Lions spoiled the Pleasant Grove Vikings hopes for a Homecoming victory last Friday as they smashed the Grovers 26-- Pleasant Grove kicked off at 3 p.m. Friday under warm, sunny skies. They soon found the Lions meant business as the Payson team ran up four first downs to set the bail on the Viking four. Mark Etherington then ran in the T.D. and the extra point was good to give Payson a 7-- 0 lead before P.G. even got their hands on the ball. A few plays later, the Lions Gary Weight took the ball thru the middle and ran 55 yards for a touchdown. Craig Haskell in made thte P.A.T. It was then that P.G. set up their own drive for the end zone. Going through four first downs (three on short passes) the Vikings worked their way to the Payson line. Mark Sanderson scored on the second try but the extra point kick was fumbled. The third Lion touchdown came right at the end of the first half as Terry Carter got a short pass into the end zone. The third and fourth quarters were scoreless except for the final Payson touchdown in the closing moments of the game. The Lion T.D. came when Dick Armstrong intercepted a Vik-ing pass and romped 30 yards. Final score was Payson 26 and P.G. 6. This week was also a home game against long time rival, American Fork. The game was played Wednesday, just too late for the Review to get the re-sults before presstime. r . , if : i y .- - 4 v - . 1 V- - r - ' ' - . j ' - j . The West brothers did their hunt-ing in the Manti area and stated it was a real task to get the elk down the mountain and into camp after it was shot. Stealers Play Championship Game Oct. .10 The Lindon-Grov- e Steeler's finished first in the Northern Utah County little league foot-ball conference with a 6 wins and 1 tie season. After their last win of 46 to 0 over the A.F. Bears last Saturday, the Steeler's coaching staff of Carl and Jerry Wilkinson and Den-nis Ruffell, manager, stated they were well pleased with the playing of the team this past season The P.G. Eagles finished in fourth place with a very excit-ing game last Saturday in which they came out ahead of the Lehi Giants 14 to 13. This Saturday will be the championship games. The Steelers will lock horns with the A.F. Colts at 11 a.m. for first and second place, and the A.F. Redskins will tangle with P.G. Eagles for third and 4th places at 9:30 a.m. Both games are in the American Fork ball park. Both teams in P.G. are sell-ing donation tickets on a rifle which will be given away Sat-urday. $1.00 donation is asked for this worthy cause. V""' "''2'"r ..-- V . j ' 1.1 ; ! 1 LYNN E. HASKELL New at Seminary Lynn E. Haskell New Teacher at P.G. Seminary Lynn E. Haskell is a new teacher at the Pleasant Grove Seminary for this school year. Announcement was given by Dr. William E. Berrett, admin-istrator of Seminaries and In-stitutes of Religion of his before the start of the school year. Mr. Haskell was a teacher at Kearns Seminary for one year. He then taught religion for two years at Liahona High School in Tonga, and at the Church College in New Zealand For the past year he has been a teacher at Sandy Seminary. Born in Ely, Nevada, he com-pleted high school at West in Salt Lake City, and graduated from the University of Utah with a major in biology and sociology. He is currently work-ing toward a master's degree in educational administration. New Zealand was his mis-sionary field of labor, and he has since served the Church in administrative and teaching positions in the auxiliary and priesthood quorums and as a high councilman. Married to the former Karen Rydman of Salt Lake City, they are the parents of four children Arnold 8, Valerie 6, Lon 4, and Brian 1. The teaching staff at the Seminary also consists of Ron-ald Firth, principal; Ross Bratt, Lynn Tolman and Dell Young. News from the High School by Shaun McCausland Pleasant Grove High School seems to be resting this week. Last week's Homecoming was a great success but everyone is settling down again with the only major activity this week being a football game with A.F. The Vikings met their long-time rivals, the league leading A.F. team yesterday (Wednes-day) but results were not avail-able by press time for the Re-view. The game was played yes-terday because of the UEA meetings for teachers and ad-ministrators on Thursday and Friday. No school will be held on those two days. Next Week, Oct. 11 to 17, has been designated as National School Lunch Week, he week's high point will be Wednesday, Oct. 14 when every student in the nation will be served the same menu. It will be chicken, butter green peas, cole slaw, a school-bake- d biscuit, cranberry jelly, and one half pint of milk, with a school baked oatmeal or rolled wheat cookie. All Pleasant Grove Schools are complying with this menu and estimate the amount of food for this area will be 1,026 pounds of chicken, 23 dozen eggs, 100 pounds of green peas, 229 lbs. of cabbage, 17 gallons of cranberry jelly, 26 lbs. of raisins, 2,432 half pints of milk, 65 lbs. of butter or margarine, 20 lbs. of non-fa- t dry milk, 260 lbs. flour, 33 lbs. rolled oats, 43 lbs. shortening, 10 gallons of vinegar, 86 lbs. sugar and 3 gallons of salad dressing. That is quite a meal! Mrs. Louise Nielsen, the lunch director for the high school, said that the school lunch program is more suc-cessful this year than it has been in the past. Between 60 and 70 lunches are being serv-ed a day more, over that serv-ed last year. Some reasons cit-ed for the increase are a choice of menu, vending machines to keep students on campus and the overall attitude of the stu-dents.
