Show Accidents Involving Ladders Cause Injuries Around the Home, Report Says Accidents involving ladders are among the more common types of home mishaps, says the Utah Safety Council. "Even more common are accidents ac-cidents resulting from using makeshift ladders boxes piled atop one another and the like," says Darcie H. White, vice president for Home Safety, Utah Safety Council. Before you climb a ladder make sure your shoes are clean of slippery materials and that no paint or any other slippery substances has spilled on the rungs. Be sure the ladder is resting firmly at the top and bottom. The space from the foot of the ladder to the wall shouldn't exceed ex-ceed one-fourth the length of the ladder, easily measured by counting the rungs. If you're using a stepladder, make sure it is fully opened and locked, and never stand on the top step of a stepladder. Watch your balance and keep a firm grip on the ladder with one hand. |
