Show Dr. Arvil Stark Speaks to Garden Club in April The April meeting of the Pleasant Grove Garden Club was held at the home of Mrs. Gene Carter. Mrs. Lucille Hill-man, Hill-man, president, conducted matters mat-ters of business and had committee com-mittee chairmen report on their activities. It was announced that a combination com-bination bake sale and shrub sale would be held May 8 to raise funds for beautification projects in the city. In place of the May meeting the Forest Service personnel will take the Garden Club members on a guided tour of Cascade Springs in the Wasatch Park area. Dr. Arvil L. Stark, Tribune Garden Consultant, was the guest speaker at the meeting. He showed many colored slides of yards and homes that were an eyesore to any passerby or tourist. He showed homes rundown run-down and that needed repair, grounds with weeds, old cars, and other debris. "These," he said, "are what the tourist sees. We are judged by our environment. en-vironment. If our places look like slum areas and we have no pride in our surroundings, we are thought of as "slobs" . . . people that don't care." Dr. Stark is on the State Board of Beautification and he has traveled extensively. He has taken pictures in almost every ev-ery community in Utah. Some people didn't realize how badly bad-ly their places looked until they saw it on film. Dr. Stark showed other films of "before" and "after" where spirited citizens cooperated and cleaned up and beautified their surroundings with the help of everyone in the community. He showed also beautiful and well kept cities and parks in Europe & Canada where there were no litter or vandalism problems. He finished his talk by showing beautiful scenes of Utah's scenic wonderland. He said, "We actually have a heaven on earth here in Utah. Where else can you go to see more scenic beauty? We just need to clean up and beautify our surroundings.'' Mrs. Stark was also at the meeting and gave suggestions on fighting the litter problem and told of the success they have had in the Salt Lake-Holl-aday area with the cooperation coopera-tion of the students in the schools. A delicious luncheon was served ser-ved to fourteen club members and guests, Dr. and Mrs. Stark and Mrs. Rulon Adams. |
