Show THE T HI E STORY OF PIOCHE by miner mike vs y 1 AA tfx 1 ka V W R in the iho early days scarred hills and shacks editor B note not I 1 this to 1 the second ol of it a series ot of eight w nicles giving highlight of f the history of 0 bloche n mining community community thich hi hit been nil an important fac factor or in utah anil and chich hns leen I 1 rebuilt ly by kutub moil the story of ciocho logins on a pleasant mid morning of 1859 after a torrential lain rain which had bathed the sage saga brush covered hills the night before when a wagon train across the tha plains stopped at a spring about 10 miles west of what is is now pioche to camp for a few days rest the rains rains had washed brighter brighte r a well defined outcrop of ore oie and the indians told the weary travelers of tho the metal panaca indian for silver which stuck out cut of the ground and from which they had fashioned crude implements in 1859 the west was alive with pa prospectors those who followed the in then their ques quest t for gold along the mother lode of california and those who came west to find and another virginia city the nevada mining camp which had cle electrified the world with its silver discoveries dasco cries prospectors and scouts from the mother lode and virginia city had fanned out to all sections of the tha west running down reports of this or that find pioche which drew its name from an early french explorer was soon the tha center of activity two prospectors raymond and ely located claims along the tha outcrop and called their property the raymond and ely the ore was rich and growth of the district was rapid from 1870 to 1873 the raymond an and d ely produced gold and silver valued at 40 virtually all of which came from the raymond and aad ely fissure and its branches in two and a half years this property paid four and one half million dol jars in in dividends with such production pioche sprang into the national spotlight and it drew the backwash of bad characters from virginia city cit the comstock and california old T timers say that pioche was the shoot inest camp of all the early western boom warns towns the third article in this series will appear in in these columns soon |
