Show conservation notes note S by W earl 11 one of the most serious conservation atlon problems confronting land owners and occupiers along streams is the protection 0 of raw banks which are gradually cutting back into cultivated fields chiefly during the spring runoff and flash flood seasons steps are being taken by soil conservation service planning technicians to control the waste water coming off fields this Is being done by the construction of toll soil saving dikes well away frota the banks and allowing for necessary ned essary outlet structures this however Is not solving the problems of eroding banks as a result of high water i 1 over in the escalante river soil conservation district mr air gatherum work unit conservationist ti onist reports that a vegetative type of bank protection job has been completed on the leo wilson farm to protect an irrigation canal on mr wilsons Wll Wil sons farm soil conservation service s e r v I 1 c e technicians planned and carried out a tree and cable revetment about feet long A one inch cable over feet long was made available to mr wilson by the district this cable was anchored awell back into the top of the banks at each end with intermediate anchors feet apart located along the bottom tot bf the wash the cables extending from the intermediate anchors to tho the main cable were set at a 30 degree angle to aid in turning out and water ater that that ran behind the prepared protection the main cable was secured to the intermediate cable with additional lengths of cable and cable clamps and all cables securely tied to log deadman Im bedded in gravel and quicksand tour four feet deep locust trees with the normal branches and foliage left in tact were fastened to the cable with the butt end of tho the tree pointing upstream by means meana of wiring with no 9 wire tour four strands in three different places the wires were twisted with a bar to make a tight tit fit sufficient trees were attached to the cables to give per cent coverage over the entire length of the cable the cash outlay to the cooperator was mr air wilson states that taint this money was well spent and Is truly a splendid effort in giving our soil the protection it merits similar type structures are being planned and applied along the parta parla river luver and creek in the parla paria river and tributaries Tributa ries soil conservation district |
