| Show Conserva conservation fion notes by W V amri we have been hearing quite a bl lately about food conservation tor for peace in order that we m may ay all become familiar with the facts la in this case I 1 would like to pass on some information which has come to my attention recently it Is true rue that more people in I 1 the world will be hungry and starving this year than at any time during the war food cons consumption matlon here in the united states after taking care of relief commitments Is 13 expected to be greater than ever before even more than in 1945 which was 10 per cent above prewar pro pre war we here in this county consumed about calories in 1946 1945 the urban population in halt half of europe la Is existing on about 2000 calories per day and there are million people in europe who wl wg receive less than calories per person per day the bread ration in france and italy for example Is only about one bialt loa per decy day with two thirds of the diet being bread the people in europe have been eating up lip their food supply at a rate that cannot be maintained until tile the time of the next harvest tile the next six months willbe much worse than the last six months we all understood at first that the food situation in the war torn areas would be critical but conditions are proving to be more serious than it was first thought the the department of agriculture food situation report of october 1 1945 estimated that world food production per capita last year at 10 per cent less than before the war later information as reported in the world food report of february 10 shows that hat world food production per person was down 12 per cent below prewar pre war with war ravaged E europe about 20 per cent below normal the drop in production was concentrated in the countries most dependent on imports wheat was especially hard hit as well as rice chief cause of the change in expectations from last tall fall to early february was drouth since the last harvest wheat supplies in tile the united states as well as in europe have disappeared more rapidly than was anticipated the united states wheat stocks on january 1 turned out to be 61 billion bushels lower than ha had d been expected ea mariter earcler riter one of the main reasons was heavier feeding of wheat to liv livestock liveston transportation has also been a serious problem especially rail shipments to U S ports and also inside europe it is now necessary to take unusual measures measure a to supply the 4 amount of wheat which was scheduled in early december for relief use namely six million tons in the first halt half of 1946 it if the united states makes good on this amount and other exporting countries supply another 1 six I 1 million tons there will still be a shortage ot of five million tons of wheat tor for emergency feeding in human terms a million tons oi of wheat means a halt half year supply ot of bread for 20 million people in devastated countries at the present time the garfield county USDA council is working up a program for local asil stance so that we maydo may do our share in alleviating this crisis |
