Show war veterans jam Cof colleges leges returning servicemen are eager to study expected by fall washington the greatest educational jam in history Is headed for or the united states as thousands of returning war veterans swamp ip colleges and universities with applications for enrollment according to the associated press already thousand veterans financed under the GI bill of rights are in college classes and thousand others have applied for entrance more afore than thousand will be in colleges and universities by fall Is I 1 the prediction of dr francis J brown staff associate of the american council of education 30 per cent are married this Is creating a university crisis said dr brown thirty per cent of veterans are married ten per P er cent have haie children this is in tharp harp contrast to the situation before the war when the great majority 0 students were single the housing problem is the greatest problem at present but we hope legislation pending in congress will be approved and will help the situation Itu atlon it provides million dollars tor for moving temporary war and defense housing to regions of greatest need dr brown said big name universities versi ties and those in large urban areas were the first to be filled by returning GIs who are entitled to lo 50 a month if single and 75 it if married while enrolled in schools or in training programs increase allotments congress has passed a bill to raise these allotments to 55 65 and 90 in addition to his sub subsistence si stence a allowance llo the veteran Is given his tuition and certain other expenses such institutions as harvard yale dartmouth and brown are nearing the limit of their normal capacity but if additional housing becomes available normal capacities can be increased substantially fally yale joined with columbia in declaring they have no capacity limits where GIs are concerned while some of the smaller col leges have not been r ush rush of stude students nth and report subnormal enroll enrollment men t all probably will be filled by tall fall educators agreed they expect the previous peak ot of american college enrollment of 14 million students in to be elc exceeded eded by at least 25 per cent at e the veterans administration it was reported veterans are taking on the job training under terms ot of the GI bill in addition to those enrolled in school classes the percentage ot of on the job trainees Is expected to increase a trend that followed the war |
