Show the histo ry of 0 mining raisina at paris city i ty I 1 taa ta 4 m alf ap V general P E connor first commander at fort douglas who becarra known as the father of utah p due to his early activities in utah iria I 1 editors Editor 1 notes not this in the third of a trian of tight articles article retarding the th history ol of park city So pioneer loneer utah mining linins comm community unit y systematic prospecting for ore in utah began with the arrival ol of general P E H connor and his call conla volunteers at what Is now fort douglas in 1862 imbued with the spirit of 0 49 as they were these volunteers spent their peaceful periods ot of inactivity showering the mountains ol of utah As a result general connor became known knolyn at as father ot utah mining their first attention was directs directed d to the west mountains probably through the tha representations ot of george B ogilvie an i apostate mormon engaged in farming oell ale had reported to general connor his discovery ot of mineral in the early fall all of 0 1863 in bingham canyon an exploring expedition under tile tha command ot of captain heltz heitz was the first to discover galena in bingham canyon and on september 17 1863 ogilvie and others formally took up there the first mining location in ili utah known as the west jordan claim in ili the follo following whig december the first mining district in the territory TN was formed and named the west koun mountain dountain tain district among the first to prospect park arelt city atea area was rector steen who although not a soldier prospector worked with them and who WIB was later to discover the ontario mine probably incited incite d by the dis dig co verles veries at west mountain he spent the winter of 0 1863 1803 64 prospecting through the tha hills ot of bingham and the two cottonwood canyons in ia the tha spring of 1864 he gave gars up his search temporarily and went to montana and wyoming the soldiers were not discouraged by the experiences ot of steen and continued to prospect south ot of bingham with no railroads to serve the territory at that time it b became became necessary to undertake domestic reduction or smelting smelling sm elting the first attempts at smelting smelling sm elting were made in the summer ot of 1864 when general connor and others erected near the present town ot of stockton a furnace ot of the pattern tills tl tha ke firsti smelter in utah was waa not successful as it was not suited to the general ores at hand the failure ot of this early smelting smelling sm elting venture and others that followed did not deter the prospectors it became apparent however that transportation was necessary to the development ol of this remote area and actual m mining ning had to await the completion of the union pacific which was organized in 1802 the fourth article in this series will ap pear in these thesa columns soon |
