Show forest officers hold special timber school at escalante rangers ot of the dixie national forest forast held a two day training meet at escalante october 10 and 11 it was stated this week by albert albertson supervisor at cedar city field work took place on the alvey timber sale area near E escalante ante where timber marking tree measurement scaling brush disposal and check scaling methods were demonstrated st rated the aim of good practices is to leave the timber stands in the best possible gro growing wing condition when timber Is cut like any other crop timber when ready for use should be harvested the crux ot of the problem lies in how the forest Is cut and left the supervisor said F forests j F ests should be managed tor for continuous production and with due regard tor for protection against erosion fire and disease dibease and to enhance the many other values besides timber that the public enjoys from forested areas and an un peacetime demand for timber emphasizes the mag and urgency ol of proper management 0 of all timberlands private as aa well as public the supervisor explained timber is too long la in the growing and public interest and need are too great tor for devastation to be practiced on any timbered areas we must recognize changes and adopt practices to present facts rather than tor for them to be based upon principles of 0 pioneer needs and beliefs it if adequate timber and sustained yield are to be attained the purpose ot of the meeting was to train personnel to manage timber to achieve these objectives on national forest land the supervisor said tile the annual cut of timber from the dixie national forest reached an all time high of board feet during the war and the same high pace Is continuing this Is nearly tour four hundred per cent of the prewar pre war peacetime rate of cut some of most valuably timber stands are located in the tha dixie national forest during the war its mills ranked third in the intermountain inter mountain region la in volume of national forest timber out cut the cut was exceeded only by that eliat of the holse and payette national forests in idaho the meeting was wag attended by assistant regional forester Forest dr W L robb and logging engineer fred R mason from the regional forest service headquarters at ogden and the following personnel of the dixie national forest forest supervisor albert A albertson assistant supervisor L D heywood administrative assistant 11 0 baker ranger wilford bentley and forest guards H grant seaman and floyd C noel cedar city rangers edson 1 adair enterprise 1 iraln awl 11 lloil johnson pine valley william bozok H hurst S bryson cook and forest guard allen alien pollock pan gultch kenneth G bower bowe r boyd leonard and forest guards starns mecham and wanless alvey escalante and ranger robert S dailey Di illey teasdale |
