Show storms halt seeding Re program areas on beaver monroe fish lake and salina districts completed recent storms and freezing weather have brought to a halt the acre planned range re seeding program for this season on the fish lake national forest it is announced by aleane betenson forest supervisor principal areas re seeded include eight mile and fool creek on the oak creek division beaver river and city creek watersheds on the beaver district indian flat and koosharem Koo sharem creek on the monroe district lost creek on the fish lake dietr district let and soldier and salina canyons on the salina district the work was done under the direction of the various forest rangers on whose districts the re seeding was done and was directly supervised by orson as general foreman in order to obtain a seed source for important new forage plants which are not available in commercial quantities on the markets a selected BO 80 acre plot in soldier canyon was prepared and seeded with intermediate tall and stiff hair wheat grass it is planned to harvest the seed from this area for use in project P planting I 1 m ti on this and other forests forest s 0 of the region crested wheat grass seed was other areas up to feet in elevation and a mixture of smooth brome timothy tall tail oat grass and slender wheat grass on higher elevations some yellow sweet clover seed was as planted in mixture with the rested c crested wheat seed newly re seeded areas will be protected from grazing for at t least two years after planting in in order to allow the young plants to become well established before grazing after that carefully managed grazing must be practiced to avoid again depleting the areas in the future fences lave ave been constructed to aid in protecting and managing the re fe seeded areas with the completion of this seasons projects approximately acres have been re seeded since 1040 1940 when principal range range re seeding was commenced anthe on the fish lake forest the forage produced when all re seeded areas are established will su support p port about 2000 head of cattle and nc head of sheep for four months month each season on a sustained yield basis the supervisor declared equipment used in the reseed ing work included crawler and wheel type tractors large wheatland and offset disc plows dixie type harrows power broadcast seeders and grain drills this equipment will be overhauled and repaired during t the ae winter in readiness for use next summer surn mer |
